AFTER-SCHOOL SPORTS PROGRAM BEING OFFERED @ HUMC

Dear Friends,
In these tumultuous times, we recognize many of the challenges our families are facing. Trying
to juggle all the demands you face is daunting. With this pandemic, additional challenges have
emerged, and one of the biggest is dealing with the reality of virtual school. Many parents are
being asked to add “teacher” to the already long list of responsibilities.

We want to help. Back at the end of July we sent out a survey asking how we could help. Here are some results:

1. When we asked if your family was affected by the change in school plans, we received
   38 responses, and 27 of you said yes, you were affected.
2. We asked if you felt the need for extra school help, 13 said yes, and 21 said no.
3. When asked about providing breakfast or lunch for your student, only 2 of 36 said yes.
4. When asked if you needed a safe place for your student to stay during the day, only 2 of
   36 said yes.
5. When asked if you needed a place for your student to interact with other students, 26
   said yes, and 9 said no.
6. Asked “do you have concerns about bringing your student to a location other than
   home”, 13 said yes, but 21 said no.
7. When rated on a scale of 1-5 about your needs and concern, lack of social interaction
   and exercise and strained parent/teacher at home relationships stood out to us as
   critical needs we could meet.

So, we have discussed how we as a church might help your family through this pandemic and
school challenge, and we are offering a partnership with “I9” a sports and recreation team that
has established HUMC as a partnering organization. We are announcing the formation of an
“afterschool program” that is designed to give your child exercise and social interaction, that is
safe and well run. Rod Arters, Director of Student Ministries and Tom Cunningham will be releasing
registration information and additional details soon. We trust that you will help us get the word
out into the community so that students can have this opportunity to run, play, and relate to
one another.
